Black Presence in British Portraits
I would think, from the brushes they are holding, that the ‘black’ participants in the Epping Forest Easter Hunt, are chimney sweeps. This event was decried by the press and ‘respectable’ classes as being too rumbustious and cockney a hunt for the 19th century. It fell into repute with much mockery of the proceedings. Not sure this image can be taken as ‘black presence’.
