Black Presence in British Portraits

BPinBP is a resource for academics and others interested in the subject matter. The project has been in development since 2016 and began to go online in June 2020. The catalogue is constantly being reviewed and refined and to this end we welcome and encourage comments and contributions from visitors – please join in the discussion on our Blog Page and use the comments boxes which you’ll find accompanying all images in the catalogue to ask questions and share your own knowledge.

The catalogue is freely available to all in a low-resolution, watermarked form with limited annotations. Please contact us to discuss academic access for full-resolution, un-watermarked and fully annotated images.

The website is not-for-profit and is run by volunteers. If you have specialist knowledge in the field and would be interested in joining the team then we’d love to hear from you – please contact us here.

You can donate to the project or become a supporter here.

We hope you enjoy exploring this rich and fascinating part of the history of black people in the history of Britain as much as we enjoy curating it. Start exploring the gallery here.
